Septic Backup Investigation and Assessment in Arcadia, Michigan

When a septic system starts backing up, the problem is often much bigger than what is visible at the surface. What may seem like a simple blockage can actually point to drainage failure, outdated infrastructure, improper pipe pitch, or a system that has reached the end of its life cycle.

That was the case during a recent septic assessment completed by GWJ Excavation and Site Prep in Arcadia.

Investigating the Cause of the Septic Backup

Our team was called out to evaluate ongoing septic backup issues at a residential property. Rather than relying on assumptions or temporary fixes, we approached the project with a full investigative process to identify the actual source of failure.

The existing system consisted of:

  • An older concrete septic tank located inside the garage

  • A secondary dry well/catch basin disposal setup outside the home

  • Aging outlet piping with questionable drainage flow

To properly assess the system, our crew:

  • Opened and inspected the existing concrete tank

  • Performed a camera and visual assessment

  • Excavated multiple locations to trace the septic layout

  • Exposed the outlet pipe

  • Investigated for an existing septic field

  • Located and uncovered the secondary dry well/catch basin

What we discovered confirmed the root cause of the backup issues.

What We Found

During excavation and inspection, we found that the secondary dry well/catch basin was completely full of water and no longer dispersing properly. This meant wastewater had nowhere to go, causing the system to back up.

In addition, the outlet pipe appeared to be pitched uphill toward the dry well rather than flowing downhill with gravity as intended. Even a slight improper grade can create major drainage problems over time, especially in older septic systems.

The combination of:

  • A failing dry well

  • Standing water

  • Improper drainage slope

  • Aging infrastructure

created the perfect conditions for recurring septic backups.

Temporary Repairs and Safety Measures

Once the issue was identified, our crew immediately completed temporary corrective measures to stabilize the system and prepare the site for the next phase of work.

This included:

  • Installing a temporary 4-inch Fernco fitting repair

  • Supporting the outlet line with proper backfill

  • Marking open excavation areas for safety

  • Beginning the Health Department permitting process for a full septic replacement

While temporary repairs can help prevent immediate worsening, systems like this typically require a properly engineered replacement solution to fully resolve the issue long term.

Why Proper Septic Assessments Matter

One of the biggest mistakes property owners can make is attempting repeated temporary fixes without understanding the real cause of the failure.

Septic issues are not something to guess at.

Older systems throughout Northern Michigan often include outdated dry wells, improperly documented layouts, or aging components that no longer meet current standards. Without excavation and proper inspection, many of these problems remain hidden underground.

At GWJ Excavation and Site Prep, we focus on identifying the true source of the issue so property owners can make informed decisions about repair, replacement, and long-term system performance.

When severe thunderstorms roll through Northern Michigan, they don’t hold back. High winds, heavy rain, and flood warnings can quickly turn properties into a mess of downed trees, washed-out driveways, and unsafe conditions.

At GWJ Excavation & Site Prep, this is exactly the kind of work we’re built for.

Storm damage can happen fast, but cleanup and recovery require the right equipment, experience, and response time. Whether it’s clearing fallen trees, restoring access roads, or addressing drainage issues, our team moves quickly to get your property back to safe, functional condition.

Severe weather may slow others down, but for us, it’s just another day doing what we do best.

Our Approach to Storm Cleanup

Every storm is different, but our process is built to handle a wide range of situations efficiently and safely.

1. Immediate Site Assessment

We start by evaluating the damage to identify hazards like unstable trees, blocked access points, or water buildup. Safety is always the first priority.

2. Tree and Debris Removal

Using heavy equipment, we clear fallen trees, branches, and debris quickly. This opens up your property and allows other recovery work to begin.

3. Restoring Access

Storms often wash out driveways or block access roads. We regrade surfaces, remove obstructions, and make sure you can safely get in and out of your property.

4. Drainage and Flood Mitigation

Flooding is a major concern after heavy rain. We address standing water, improve drainage paths, and help prevent future water damage with proper grading and site adjustments.

5. Site Stabilization

After cleanup, we ensure the land is stable and ready for whatever comes next, whether that’s rebuilding, construction, or simply returning to normal use.

Why Proper Equipment Matters

Storm cleanup is not a DIY situation. Large-scale damage requires professional-grade equipment and experienced operators. Our machinery allows us to handle everything from dense tree removal to heavy site grading with precision and efficiency.
